Types of ESL Jobs in South Korea
There are a lot of ESL Job opportunities in South Korea and you may well find yourself overwhelmed by the number of job offers. However there are basically three types of ESL Programs. Private Language Institutes (Hagwons), Public schools (elem/mid/high) as well as the after schools program.
Teachers who wish to teach English in South Korea will need to familiarize themselves with the differences between each of these ESL Programs, in order to choose the job that they will find most suitable. We are here to help you with that process, and to make sure that the job you end up getting is the right one for you.
Public Schools
While searching for public school jobs in Korea you may have come across the terms EPIK or GEPIK program. The EPIK (English Program in Korea) is in charge of recruiting western English teachers for all provinces in South Korea except the Gyeonggi province and Seoul. The GEPIK program stands for the Gyeonggi province English Program in Korea. The Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (S.M.O.E) is the body in charge of public schools in Seoul. Each of the programs has a slightly different salary range. Note however that due to the English teacher¡¯s preference towards living in a big city, public schools that are located in rural areas offer 100 thousand on top of the basic salary as a designated rural area allowance.
Once you have applied for a public schools position you will choose to teach among elementary, middle and high school students, as well as this you will get to choose the location that you wish to work in.
The new semesters start in March and September. Hence the recruitment for public School teachers starts in Jan and July respectively. However there are unexpected vacancies and unfilled positions throughout the whole year.
If you think that the things listed below are important, then you may wish to consider working in a public school.
Less working hours, easy schedule and a longer vacation
When the students go on a trip, take a mid/final term, or have a sporting event day etc you will not have to work.
Someone who doesn¡¯t mind large class sizes as well as an irregular level of English.
Someone who wants to experience an average Korean working environment.
Job stability.
If you don¡¯t mind a language barrier as your Korean co teacher might be the only person who speaks English in the school.
